Questions

Will my GIF still be animated afterwards?

Yes. Every frame is decoded and resized individually, and the original per-frame delays are carried through to the output.

How do I make an animated GIF smaller?

Frame rate first, palette second, dimensions third. Halving the frame rate roughly halves the file. Cutting the palette from 256 to 64 colours often takes another third off with very little visible change on flat artwork.

What does the palette lock do?

It builds one colour table from every frame and reuses it, instead of quantising each frame separately. That stops flat areas from shifting hue between frames — the "my colours flicker after upload" problem — and it makes the file smaller, since only one table is written.

Why did the transparent edges get hard?

GIF only supports fully transparent or fully opaque pixels, so soft anti-aliased edges have to snap one way or the other. The tool warns you when your source has semi-transparent pixels. If you need soft edges, PNG or APNG is the format, not GIF.

Is there a size limit on what I can drop in?

Only your device. Everything runs locally in a Web Worker, so a very large GIF costs you memory and a few seconds rather than an upload.

Is this a general GIF resizer or only for emotes?

General. Type any square size and it works as a plain online GIF resizer, with the platform presets there if you happen to want one. The emote work simply made the underlying decoder and encoder careful enough to trust with any animated file.

How do I reduce the size of a GIF?

Three levers, and they are not equal. Frame rate is the strongest: a GIF stores every frame whole, so 30fps to 15fps roughly halves the file. Palette is next — 256 colours down to 64 typically takes another third off flat artwork with nothing visible lost. Dimensions are the weakest lever and the one most tools reach for first. All three are sliders here, with the resulting file size shown as you move them.

Can we resize a GIF?

Yes, and it stays animated. Doing it properly means decoding every frame, handling GIF’s frame-disposal rules so nothing smears, resampling each frame, then rebuilding the animation with its original per-frame delays. Tools that skip the disposal handling produce trails; tools that re-quantise each frame separately produce colour drift. This one locks a single palette across the whole animation, which removes the drift and shrinks the file at the same time.

How to create a small GIF?

Start by cropping away everything that is not the subject — a tighter crop costs nothing and buys more than compression does. Then cut the frame rate to 12–15fps, which most short loops survive without looking choppy. Then reduce the palette. Flat artwork tolerates 64 colours easily; photographic footage does not, and is the wrong source for a small GIF in the first place.
