Discord PFP Cropper

Discord crops your avatar to a circle, so anything that matters has to sit inside the middle of a square. This crops to that square first, at three sizes, so you can see what survives the circle before you upload it rather than after.

Questions

What size should a Discord profile picture be?

Discord does not publish a required size — it accepts a wide range and resizes for you. 512×512 is a safe upload that stays sharp on a high-density screen, and 128×128 is what the client usually displays.

Why does my avatar look cut off?

Because Discord masks it to a circle. The corners of your square are always hidden. Crop so the subject sits well inside the middle, and check the 128px output — that is roughly the size other people actually see.

Can I use a GIF as my profile picture?

Discord allows animated avatars with Nitro. Drop a GIF here and the crop is applied to every frame, so the animation comes back intact rather than frozen on frame one.

Does cropping lose quality?

Cropping does not. Downscaling does, a little, which is why the resampling here is a proper filtered downscale with premultiplied alpha rather than a browser default — no dark fringe around transparent edges.

How can I resize an image to fit my Discord profile picture?

Crop it square first, then size it. Discord accepts a wide range and resizes for you, so the reason to control it yourself is the circular mask: whatever sits in the corners is thrown away. This page crops to the square, previews the circle, and outputs 512, 256 and 128px so you can judge the small one before uploading.

How big is a Discord PFP?

Discord does not publish a required size. 512×512 is the sensible upload — big enough to stay sharp on a high-density screen, small enough that nothing rejects it. 128×128 is roughly what the client displays, which makes it the size worth judging your crop at. Animated avatars are a GIF and need Nitro.

Why is my Discord pfp so low quality?

Almost always because the source was small and got upscaled, or it was a JPEG that had already been compressed once and Discord re-encoded it again. Upload 512×512 or larger as a PNG. If the picture has soft or transparent edges, the format matters more than the dimensions — JPEG has no transparency and puts visible noise around hard edges.

Is jpg or PNG better for Discord?

PNG, for anything with flat colour, sharp edges or transparency — which covers avatars, emoji and artwork. It is lossless, so re-encoding does not degrade it, and it is the only one of the two that supports transparency. JPEG is the better choice only for a photograph that has to be small, and for a profile picture nothing here is close to a size limit.
